How it is detected
The app asks Shopify whether the store is a development store at install and remembers the answer. There is nothing to enable.
Testing the paid flow
If you are building a paid integration and want to test the real subscription flow, you can select a paid plan on a development store at no charge, provided the store belongs to the same Partner organisation as the app. Shopify creates a real subscription contract with $0 effective prices, so upgrades, downgrades and entitlement changes all behave exactly as they will in production.
When the store goes live
Once a development store is transferred to a merchant and goes live, normal pricing applies. Everything the merchant built while it was a development store carries over.
For agencies
Build the whole campaign on the development store, get the client’s sign-off, transfer the store. The campaign, styling and gift configuration all move with it.
